International Day of Potato

30 May 2026 — Fried, baked or mashed, I'm the star of every table!

The potato was domesticated about 8,000 years ago in the Andes, near Lake Titicaca in South America. It reached Europe in the 16th century and gradually became one of the continent's staple foods. Today it is grown in more than 150 countries and is part of the daily diet of more than a billion people. It is rich in carbohydrates and provides vitamin C and potassium. It also grows in many different climates, which makes it important for food security. The UN General Assembly proclaimed 30 May the International Day of Potato in December 2023, and it was first observed in 2024. The day highlights the potato's role in ending hunger, supporting healthy diets and promoting sustainable farming. The potato is a fine example of a crop from high mountains that has travelled around the whole world, like a wandering celestial body.

Flying across the sky: An ethereal, bluish-silver star figure made of luminous dots and thin connecting lines, like a constellation drifting across the sky: a round, playful potato with a tiny pointed cap and little sprouting eyes, tumbling along like a small asteroid
