World Turkish Coffee Day

5 December 2026 — Brew it slowly, and the stars will come to visit!

Turkish coffee is made in a distinctive way: very finely ground coffee is simmered slowly with water, often with sugar, in a small long-handled pot called a cezve, until a thick foam rises. It is served in small cups with a glass of water and often a piece of Turkish delight. Coffee is a symbol of hospitality, conversation and even traditional matchmaking visits, and after drinking, the cup is sometimes turned over to read the grounds. In December 2013 the culture and tradition of Turkish coffee was inscribed on UNESCO's Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, and this day is linked to that inscription. The date is fixed – 5 December, the day of the 2013 inscription – and has no tie to solstices or moon phases, though December's long nights are perfect for stargazing with a warm cup in hand.
