Union of the Romanian Principalities Day
24 January 2026 — Join hands – the dance of union begins!
On 24 January Romania marks the Union of the Principalities Day. It recalls 1859, when Moldavia and Wallachia chose the same ruler, Alexandru Ioan Cuza. He was first elected in Iași, Moldavia, on 5 January (17 January in the modern calendar), and then in Bucharest, Wallachia, on 24 January (5 February in the modern calendar). The two principalities were thus joined in the person of one prince, and in 1862 a unified state with a single government and assembly in Bucharest was formed. The day is an official holiday in Romania. Its best-known tradition is the Dance of the Union (Hora Unirii), a circle dance in which people hold hands, often in folk costume. There are festivities, concerts and ceremonies, especially in Iași, Bucharest and Focșani. The date is fixed and does not depend on the Moon, and it falls in midwinter, when the nights are long and there is more time for stargazing.
