Father's Day
10 May 2026 · movable holiday — Climb on my shoulders – the stars are closer from up here!
In Romania, Father's Day (Ziua Tatălui) falls on the second Sunday of May, not on the third Sunday of June as in many other countries. It is a day to thank fathers and everyone who cares for children as a father would. People usually give a card, a flower, a small gift, or share a family lunch. It belongs to a pair with Mother's Day, which is marked a week earlier, on the first Sunday of May. The date is movable and lands on a different day each year; in 2026 it is 10 May. The holiday has no tie to a lunar calendar or a solstice, but May nights are a lovely time to go outside with children. Early in the month, in the hours before dawn, you may also catch meteors from the Eta Aquariids, made of dust from Halley's Comet; from these latitudes they are fairly sparse. A father with a child on his shoulders, pointing upward, is a lovely way to share that sky together.
Flying across the sky: An ethereal, bluish-silver figure made of luminous dots and thin connecting lines, like a constellation drifting across the sky: a tall father with a small child sitting on his shoulders
