Traditional Costume Day

10 May 2026 · movable holiday — Every stitch tells a story. Dance with me under the stars!

The traditional costume is one of the most vivid symbols of Romanian identity. Its best-known piece is the ie, a long white blouse of linen, hemp or cotton, hand-embroidered on the sleeves, collar and chest. Motifs and colours vary from region to region and are often passed from mother to daughter. In 2022 UNESCO inscribed the skills linked to the blouse with embroidery on the shoulder on its Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, jointly for Romania and Moldova. Today people wear costumes at village fairs, in schools and on social media, while exhibitions and workshops show how the embroidery is made. The day is celebrated every second Sunday of May and was established by law in 2016. A separate Ia Day is also marked on 24 June, close to the summer solstice, but that is a different occasion. There is no direct link between this holiday and the night sky; our hero is simply a tribute to the stitches.

Flying across the sky: An ethereal, bluish-silver star figure made of luminous dots and thin lines, shaped like a traditional embroidered blouse with wide sleeves, gently twirling as if dancing
