Great Union Day

1 December 2026 — Join the dance – today Romania celebrates its union!

On 1 December Romania marks Great Union Day. It commemorates 1 December 1918, when an assembly of delegates of the Romanians of Transylvania, Banat, Crișana and Maramureș met in Alba Iulia and voted for the union of these lands with the Kingdom of Romania. Following the earlier union with Bessarabia and Bukovina that year, this completed what is often called Greater Romania. It became the national day after 1990, replacing an earlier date. Today it is celebrated with military parades, especially in Bucharest and Alba Iulia, as well as concerts, folk dances and traditional costumes. Many people display the blue-yellow-red tricolour flag. The day is a public holiday. It follows the solar calendar, so it always falls on the same date, at the start of winter, when the long nights offer good stargazing.
