Labour Day and Arminden

1 May 2026 — A green sprig above the gate – for health and a good harvest!

May 1 is a public holiday in Romania, celebrated as Labour Day. The holiday grew out of the labour movement of the late 19th century, when workers campaigned for an eight-hour working day. Today in many countries it is a day of rest, outings and gatherings in nature.

Romanian folk tradition also marks Arminden on this day, welcoming spring and fertility. People pick green branches and hang them above gates, windows and doors, and in some places on fences and fields, to protect the home, the livestock and the crops. The custom follows the rhythm of the farming year: spring has arrived, nature is in bloom, and everyone hopes for a good harvest.

The date is fixed – May 1 every year in the Gregorian calendar – and falls shortly before the midpoint between the spring equinox and the summer solstice, in the heart of spring.

Flying across the sky: An ethereal, bluish-silver star figure made of luminous dots and fine lines, like a constellation drifting across the sky: a young man reaching up to hang a leafy green-tinted sprig above a gate of starlight
