National Minorities Day
18 December 2026 — Many embroideries, one wreath – diversity makes the sky beautiful!
National Minorities Day in Romania is marked on 18 December. It was established by a decision of the Romanian Government in 1998 as a celebration of the communities that live side by side in the country: Hungarians, Roma, Germans, Ukrainians, Serbs, Turks, Tatars, Bulgarians and many others. The date recalls 18 December 1992, when the UN General Assembly adopted the Declaration on the Rights of Persons Belonging to National or Ethnic, Religious and Linguistic Minorities. The day honours respect for diversity, as well as the languages, music, costumes and crafts of each community. Exhibitions, concerts, festivals and school and cultural-centre events take place, often with traditional food and embroidery. It is an official observance in the country, but not a day off. The link with the sky is symbolic: 18 December falls just before the winter solstice, when nights are longest and the stars are visible for the most hours. So a wreath of embroideries drifts across the Astronativa sky, like a constellation woven from many patterns.
Flying across the sky: An ethereal, bluish-silver wreath made of luminous dots and fine lines, like a constellation, slowly drifting across the sky
