Mother's Day
3 May 2026 · movable holiday — Tonight the sky smells of lily of the valley. Happy Mother's Day, Mom!
In Romania, Mother's Day is celebrated on the first Sunday of May. It is a secular holiday: children of all ages thank their mothers with flowers, cards, small gifts and a family meal. Schools and kindergartens often prepare festive programmes with poems and songs. The idea of a day honouring mothers has wider roots in the 20th century, and different countries mark it on different dates; Romania has its own date in the national calendar rather than a single worldwide day. The date is movable: it follows the rule of the first Sunday of May, so it always falls between 1 and 7 May. This is the time of full spring, when the days are long and the evening sky stays light for longer. Lily of the valley is a favourite spring flower, which makes it a fitting image for the day.
Flying across the sky: An ethereal, bluish-silver figure made of luminous dots and thin lines, like a constellation: a bouquet of lily-of-the-valley sprigs with small bell-shaped blossoms, tied with a ribbon of stars
