Romanian Language Day

31 August 2026 — My letters are dancing: ă, â, î, ș, ț! Happy Language Day!

Romanian Language Day (Ziua Limbii Române) is celebrated every year on 31 August. The Romanian Parliament established it by law in 2013. The date recalls 31 August 1989, when a law in Moldova made the language official and restored the Latin alphabet. It is observed in Romania and also in Moldova, where 31 August is the day of „Limba noastră“ (Our Language), as well as in Romanian communities around the world. Events include poetry readings, literary gatherings and book exhibitions. Romanian is a Romance language descended from Latin, and it has special letters: ă, â, î, ș and ț. Of these, ș and ț are especially characteristic of Romanian. The holiday has no link to a lunar calendar, solstice or any astronomical event. Its date falls at the end of summer, about three weeks before the autumn equinox.

Flying across the sky: An ethereal, bluish-silver constellation-like flock of letters made of luminous dots and thin lines, including ă, â, î, ș and ț, drifting across the night sky
