National Anthem Day

29 July 2026 — The notes have taken flight! Can you hear „Deșteaptă-te, române!“ ring out?

On 29 July, Romania marks National Anthem Day. The anthem, „Deșteaptă-te, române!“ („Awaken thee, Romanian!“), has lyrics by the poet Andrei Mureșanu, written in 1848 during the revolutions that swept Europe. The melody was arranged by Anton Pann. The song spread as a call for freedom and unity, and it was sung during the Romanian Revolution of December 1989, after which it was adopted as the national anthem. The day itself was established by Law No. 99 of 1998. Observances include concerts, ceremonies with military bands, and public performances of the anthem. The date has no direct astronomical meaning, but in our night sky the notes take flight like a flock of birds over the Carpathians.

Flying across the sky: An ethereal, bluish-silver flock of musical notes made of light dots and thin lines, drifting across the night sky like a constellation of migrating birds, with a treble clef leading the flock
