National Flag Day
26 June 2026 — The tricolour streams like a comet's tail!
Every year on 26 June, Romania marks National Flag Day. The tricolour has three vertical stripes: blue at the hoist, yellow in the middle and red at the fly. Its colours are linked with the national awakening of the mid-19th century, especially the 1848 revolutions in Wallachia and Moldavia. After the union of the two principalities in 1859 and the creation of the modern Romanian state, the tricolour gradually became the country's symbol. The day was set by law in 1998. It is marked with flag-raising ceremonies in front of public buildings, events with soldiers and schoolchildren, and tricolours displayed on streets and houses. In our sky the flag becomes a comet: a bright head trailing a long, colourful tail that can be seen from afar, just as a flag can be seen high above a square.
Flying across the sky: An ethereal figure made of luminous dots and thin lines, like a constellation: a long waving flag with three vertical stripes traced in star points, softly tinted blue, yellow and red, streaming behind a bright bluish-silver head like the tail of a comet as it drifts across the night sky
