Feast of the Cross
14 September 2026 — May basil and the glow of the oil lamp bring peace and light to your home.
The Feast of the Cross (Ziua Crucii in Romanian) is observed on 14 September, when the Orthodox Church celebrates the Exaltation of the Holy Cross. It commemorates the finding and raising of the cross on which, according to tradition, Christ was crucified, and it is a major church feast and a day of fasting. In Romanian tradition, sprigs of basil are blessed in church and then carried home by the faithful. Folk belief holds that around this day snakes and birds begin to withdraw or fly away for the winter, as autumn takes hold. The date falls shortly before the autumn equinox, as nights grow longer and the stars appear earlier in the evening. That is why a symbol crosses the Astronativa sky: a sprig of basil and an oil lamp, a sign of blessing, warmth and quiet hope for the home.
Flying across the sky: An ethereal, bluish-silver figure made of luminous dots and fine lines like a constellation: a small sprig of basil drifting across the night sky beside a gently glowing oil lamp
