Constantin Brâncuși Day
19 February 2026 — I soar toward the stars, just like in Bird in Space!
Constantin Brâncuși was born on 19 February 1876 in Hobița, Gorj County, Romania, and is regarded as one of the pioneers of modern sculpture. He worked mostly in Paris, seeking the essence of form through smooth, simplified lines. His best-known works include the Bird in Space series, The Kiss and the Endless Column. The Column belongs to the ensemble in Târgu Jiu, created to commemorate those who fell in the First World War. Brâncuși died in Paris on 16 March 1957. His birthday is marked in Romania with exhibitions, talks and visits to museums and to the Târgu Jiu ensemble. The sky connection lives in his work itself: the bird reaches upward, and the column resembles a ladder to the heights. That is why an airy bird made of points of light drifts across the starry sky today, as if taking off from stone and metal. The day falls on a fixed date, 19 February, every year.
Flying across the sky: An ethereal, golden-silver bird made of luminous dots and thin connecting lines like a constellation, with a smooth elongated body and a raised head, gliding upward across the night sky and leaving a faint trail of tiny stars
