International Day of Women and Girls in Science
11 February 2026 — I just drew a new constellation! Want to see it?
The International Day of Women and Girls in Science is observed every year on 11 February. The UN General Assembly established it by a resolution in December 2015. Its aim is to promote full and equal access to science for women and girls, and their participation in it. The day is organised by the UN together with UNESCO and UN Women. Around the world it is marked with lectures, workshops, exhibitions and meetings in schools, universities and science centres. The idea is to show that curiosity has no gender, and that any girl can become a researcher, an engineer or an astronomer. Astronomy has many women in its history, such as Henrietta Leavitt, who discovered the relationship between the period and brightness of Cepheid variables (a kind of variable star), which helped measure distances across the Universe. The starry sky is open to anyone who looks up.
