Mountain Day

11 August 2026 — Up we go! Even the little cloud smiles from the top!

Mountain Day (Yama no Hi in Japanese) is observed in Japan on 11 August. As an exception, because of the Tokyo Olympics, it was moved to 10 August in 2020 and to 8 August in 2021. It is the newest national holiday in the country: it was established by law in 2014 and first celebrated in 2016. Its purpose is to give people a chance to get closer to the mountains and be thankful for their blessings. Mountains cover a large part of Japan, and the most famous of them is Mount Fuji, sacred to many. On this day many families go hiking, climb peaks or simply relax in nature. The holiday falls in the middle of summer, when mountain nights are cooler, and the Perseid meteor shower peaks around 12–13 August, so on a clear night it is a lovely time to watch the stars. If 11 August falls on a Sunday, the day off moves to the following weekday. The date is fixed and does not follow the lunar calendar.
