Vishu

15 April 2026 · movable holiday — Happy Vishu! Today’s first sight brings good luck. Today’s first sight brings good luck.

Vishu is the traditional (astronomical) New Year festival of Kerala in south-western India, held on the first day of the Malayalam month Medam, usually 14 or 15 April. It follows a solar calendar and is linked to the Sun entering the sign of Aries in the Indian sidereal system, which is measured against the fixed stars. The central custom is Vishukkani, “the first sight”. The evening before, the family arranges fruit, vegetables, golden konna flowers (golden shower tree), a mirror, yellow cloth, coins and a lit lamp. In the morning, people are led to it with their eyes closed, so that this is the first thing they see; it is believed to bring good fortune for the whole year. Other traditions include Vishukkaineettam, gifts of money usually from elders to children, new clothes, fireworks, and a lavish vegetarian feast called sadya.

Flying across the sky: An ethereal, bluish-silver figure made of bright dots and lines like a constellation: a drifting branch of golden-yellow konna (golden shower) blossoms, sprinkled with tiny sparkling firework bursts, gliding slowly across the night sky
