The holidays of the sky

🕯️

Maundy Thursday (Jueves Santo)

2 April 2026 · movable holiday — A quiet evening, warm candles, light along the old streets.

Maundy Thursday marks the Last Supper, the final meal Jesus shared with his disciples, and is one of the most solemn days of Holy Week. In Spain, where it is called Jueves Santo (Holy Thursday), it is a public holiday in most regions. Churches hold an evening Mass, after which many people visit several churches to pray before the altars where the consecrated Eucharist is kept, a custom often called visiting the monuments. In the evening, processions of religious brotherhoods (cofradías, lay associations of believers) wind through towns and cities, carrying candles and bearing sculpted sacred images through the streets in quiet reverence. The date moves each year because it depends on Catholic Easter, which falls on the Sunday after the first full moon on or after 21 March (the Church’s fixed date for the spring equinox). That is why the nights of Holy Week often glow beneath a nearly full Moon.

Flying across the sky: An ethereal, bluish-silver figure made of luminous dots and fine lines, like a constellation: a slow row of small candle flames drifting in a line across the night sky, each one a soft glowing star-point with a faint trail of light behind it
