Maundy Thursday
9 April 2026 · movable holiday — The first red egg guards the home all year!
Maundy Thursday is the Thursday before Orthodox Easter and part of Holy Week. In many Orthodox lands it is traditionally the day for dyeing Easter eggs; in Serbia this is more often done on Good Friday, though in some areas on Maundy Thursday. The first egg dyed is usually red and, by custom, is called the „čuvarkuća“, the guardian of the home. It is kept near the icons or in another place of honour for a whole year, until the next Easter, to protect the family and the house. Red symbolises the blood of Christ shed on the cross, as well as the joy of the Resurrection. Eggs were often dyed with natural materials, such as onion skins. Orthodox Easter is set by a lunisolar reckoning: it falls on the first Sunday after the first full moon on or after the spring equinox, both reckoned by the Julian calendar according to the Church rules (the Paschalion). This is why the date of Maundy Thursday moves each year. In 2026 it falls on 9 April in the Gregorian calendar.
Flying across the sky: An ethereal, bluish-silver figure made of luminous dots and fine lines, like a constellation drifting across the sky: an egg-shaped outline glowing with a soft reddish-silver tint, resting in a small woven basket of leaf-shaped star lines
