Easter Monday
13 April 2026 · movable holiday — Christos Anesti! May the day be bright and warm for everyone!
Easter Monday is an official public holiday in Greece, observed the day after Orthodox Easter. It carries on the joy of the Resurrection: families gather around festive tables, visit one another and exchange the greetings “Christos Anesti” (Christ is risen) and “Alithos Anesti” (Truly He is risen). The red egg is a symbol of new life, and its colour recalls sacrifice and resurrection. Traditionally, people crack their eggs against each other, and whoever is left with an unbroken egg is said to have good luck for the year. The date is movable: Orthodox Easter is calculated using the Julian-based computus: it falls on the first Sunday after the first full moon on or after the spring equinox, which is fixed at 21 March in the Julian calendar (3 April in the Gregorian). So the date depends on the phases of the moon and changes every year. In 2026, Orthodox Easter is on 12 April and Easter Monday on 13 April.
