Easter Monday

6 April 2026 · movable holiday — Roll, little egg! May you go furthest and stay whole!

Easter Monday is the day after Easter Sunday in the Western churches and a bank holiday in England, Wales and Northern Ireland. It is not a bank holiday in Scotland. It belongs to the Easter season in the Christian tradition, but today many people spend it on walks, family outings, markets and trips into the spring countryside. A well-known custom is egg rolling: boiled, decorated eggs are rolled down a hill, and the winner is the egg that goes furthest or stays unbroken. Similar contests are held in parks and towns across the United Kingdom. The link to the sky is the calendar itself: Western Easter depends on the spring equinox and the full moon. It falls on the first Sunday after the first ecclesiastical full moon on or after 21 March, so the Monday after it moves each year. In 2026, Easter Monday is on 6 April.

Flying across the sky: An ethereal, bluish-silver egg made of bright dots and fine connecting lines, like a small constellation, rolling gently down an invisible starry hill
