Easter Monday
6 April 2026 · movable holiday — The bells came back from Rome and brought eggs for the children!
Easter Monday is the day after Western (Catholic) Easter, and in France it is a public holiday. According to an old French folk belief, the church bells fall silent on Maundy Thursday as a sign of mourning and fly away to Rome. On Easter Sunday they return, dropping sweet and chocolate eggs into gardens for children to find. That is why many families hold egg hunts and then gather for a long shared lunch. The season is linked to the Resurrection, and the egg is a symbol of new life. The date follows the sky: Easter falls on the first Sunday after the first (ecclesiastical) full moon on or after 21 March, so the holiday moves each year between late March and late April. In this way the spring sky decides when the bells come home.
Flying across the sky: An ethereal, bluish-silver star figure made of luminous dots and fine lines, like a constellation, shaped as a small flying bell with a ribbon, drifting across the night sky
