Easter Wells (Osterbrunnen)

29 March 2026 · movable holiday — The fountain is dressed in eggs and greenery – happy Easter! – happy Easter!

Easter Wells (German: Osterbrunnen) are a folk custom found mostly in Franconia, in northern Bavaria. Before Easter, villages and towns decorate their public fountains and wells with garlands of greenery, flowers and hundreds of painted or decorated eggs, often hung on wreaths and arches. The custom honours the importance of clean water for a community and welcomes spring and Easter. The decorations usually stay up for the days around the holiday, and many places hold walks and small celebrations; visitors travel specially to see the prettiest fountains. The modern form of the custom spread during the twentieth century, especially in Franconian Switzerland, a karst region where water has always been precious. Easter is a movable feast: in Western churches it falls on the first Sunday after the first ecclesiastical full moon on or after 21 March (the fixed date of the spring equinox). So the custom is tied to the sky too, and our starry well is a reminder of the spring heavens.
