Ascension Day

14 May 2026 · movable holiday — Light rises above the clouds – Light rises above the clouds – a quiet, warm feast day.

Ascension Day is a Christian feast commemorating the rising of Jesus Christ into heaven, as told in the New Testament (Acts of the Apostles). By tradition it takes place forty days after the Resurrection, so the feast always falls on a Thursday, 39 days after Easter Sunday – that is, on the fortieth day if Easter itself is counted as day one. In Germany (Christi Himmelfahrt) it is a public holiday nationwide. It also coincides with Father's Day (Vatertag), when groups of men traditionally go on outings, often pulling small carts with music. Many congregations hold open-air services and processions. The feast is movable because it depends on Easter, which is set by a lunisolar rule: the first Sunday after the first (ecclesiastical) full moon on or after 21 March, the fixed church date of the spring equinox. So the sky indirectly decides the date. In 2026 it falls on 14 May according to the Western (Gregorian) Easter reckoning; Orthodox Christians mark it on 21 May.
