Vaisakhi

14 April 2026 · movable holiday — Boom-ba-dum! The dhol calls the harvest – dance under the stars!

Vaisakhi is celebrated on the first day of the solar month of Vaisakh, usually 13 or 14 April. In Punjab it is a harvest festival: the winter wheat ripens and farmers give thanks for the crop. There are processions, fairs, songs and dances, including bhangra (a Punjabi folk dance) set to the beat of the big dhol drum. For Sikhs it is also a sacred date: in 1699 Guru Gobind Singh founded the Khalsa (the community of initiated Sikhs). It is honoured with prayers in gurdwaras (Sikh houses of worship) and with processions, and the day is treated with deep respect. The date follows the solar calendar and is tied to the Sun's entry into the zodiac sign Aries in the traditional Indian reckoning, so it falls on almost the same day each year and marks the solar new year in many regions of India.
