Vasant Panchami
23 January 2026 · movable holiday — Spring rides in on the wind. May knowledge bloom like mustard flowers!
Vasant Panchami is the Hindu festival that welcomes spring. It falls on the fifth day of the waxing moon (shukla paksha) in the month of Magha, usually between January and February. Because it follows the lunisolar Hindu calendar, its date shifts each year; in 2026 it falls on 23 January.
Today the festival is closely tied to Saraswati, the goddess of knowledge, music and the arts. Students, teachers and artists place their books and musical instruments before her and offer prayers. Many people wear yellow, the colour of blooming mustard fields, and share yellow dishes such as sweet saffron rice.
In parts of India and Pakistan, kites are flown at this time of year, and in many schools small children write their first letters. The festival is a reminder that after winter the land awakens, and curiosity with it.
Flying across the sky: An ethereal, bluish-silver kite made of luminous dots and thin connecting lines, like a constellation, gliding across the night sky with a long star-dotted tail; a few small flower-shaped clusters of light, like blooming mustard, trail behind it
