St. Barbara's Day

4 December 2026 — A branch blooms among the stars: a gentle, bright feast day!

On 4 December, in Germany, Austria and other countries, people mark the day of St. Barbara. By custom, on this day cuttings are taken from a cherry tree or another fruit tree and placed in a vase of water indoors. If the twigs blossom by Christmas Eve (24 December), it is taken as a good omen and a sign of luck for the coming year. The custom is called Barbarazweig (Barbara branch). It is tied to the legend of St. Barbara, who, on her way to prison, is said to have caught a twig on her clothes, and it bloomed while she was held captive. The tradition also builds a bridge to the winter festivities: while it is cold outside and the nights are long, a branch flowers in the house. The day falls about two and a half weeks before the winter solstice, when the night is longest and the stars are visible for the most hours. A blossoming branch is therefore a fitting image of hope under the winter sky.
