Varia di Palmi

30 August 2026 · movable holiday — A cloud of stars drifts skyward, lifted by many hands.

The Varia is a solemn procession in Palmi, a town in Calabria, southern Italy. It traditionally takes place on the last Sunday of August, though not every year, in honour of the Madonna della Sacra Lettera, the town's patron. At its heart is a huge structure, more than 15 metres tall, that represents the heavens and the Assumption of Mary. Around two hundred bearers, called „mbuttaturi“ (in local dialect, roughly „those who push“), carry it on their shoulders through the streets, surrounded by cheering crowds. It is a shared effort of whole families and generations. In 2013 the Varia was inscribed on UNESCO's list of intangible cultural heritage, together with other great processional structures of Italy: the Giglio of Nola, the Macchina di Santa Rosa in Viterbo and the Candelieri of Sassari. The date is movable: the last Sunday of August, which in 2026 is 30 August. Whether the procession is held in a given year is announced separately in Palmi. The image of a cloud full of stars recalls the sky toward which the whole procession reaches.

Flying across the sky: An ethereal, bluish-silver figure made of luminous dots and thin lines, like a constellation: a tall, towering cloud-shaped structure studded with tiny stars, slowly drifting across the night sky
