Assumption of Mary (Asunción)
15 August 2026 — White flowers and a single star over the village – happy feast day!
On 15 August the Catholic Church celebrates the Assumption of Mary, known in Spain as la Asunción. According to Catholic teaching, the Virgin Mary was taken body and soul into heavenly glory at the end of her earthly life. The dogma was proclaimed by Pope Pius XII in 1950, but devotion to this day is far older. In Spain, 15 August is a national public holiday. Around it, many villages hold their summer fiestas, with services, processions, music and shared meals. A famous example is the Misteri d’Elx, a medieval sacred drama in Elche that UNESCO has recognised as intangible cultural heritage. White flowers are a traditional sign of purity and devotion to Mary. The feast falls in high summer, when nights are clear and the sky is often busy with shooting stars from the Perseid meteor shower, which peaks around 12–13 August.
Flying across the sky: An ethereal, bluish-silver figure made of luminous dots and fine lines, like a constellation: a small village chapel with a bell tower, crowned by a single bright star
