Assumption of Mary
15 August 2026 — May the light of this day bring peace and quiet to every home.
The Assumption of Mary (in French, Assomption) is celebrated on 15 August. According to Christian tradition, it marks the end of Mary's earthly life and her being taken up body and soul into heavenly glory. In the Catholic Church it is one of the most important Marian feasts, and in Orthodox tradition the feast is known as the Dormition; churches following the Revised Julian calendar keep it on 15 August, while those on the Julian calendar keep it on 28 August. In France it has been a public holiday since the early nineteenth century. In the heart of summer, many people attend Mass, and in several coastal towns processions with candles and boats on the water are held. The lily is an age-old symbol of purity, while blue and the star are often associated with the image of Mary. The date is fixed and does not depend on the phases of the Moon. It falls in warm August nights, when shooting stars from the Perseid meteor shower can still be seen.
