Dormition of the Mother of God
15 August 2026 — A quiet lamp and white flowers: peace to all who celebrate today.
The Dormition of the Mother of God is observed on 15 August and is one of the greatest feasts for Orthodox Christians in Greece, where it is a public holiday. Church tradition says that on this day the Virgin Mary completed her earthly life, with the apostles gathered around her. The feast ends the Dormition Fast, which begins on 1 August. In Greece it is the heart of summer: thousands of pilgrims travel to the island of Tinos, to the Church of Panagia Evangelistria, and across the country there are liturgies, processions and village festivals (panigiria) with shared meals and music. Flowers and herbs are often blessed in churches. The date is fixed in the calendar and does not follow the phases of the Moon. In mid-August the night sky also offers the Perseid meteor shower, which many people watch around the same time, especially in darker rural and island places.
Flying across the sky: An ethereal, bluish-silver figure made of luminous dots and thin connecting lines, like a constellation: a small hanging oil lamp (kandili) with a soft flame, surrounded by drifting white blossoms
