Marine Day
20 July 2026 · movable holiday — A wave, a little boat and thanks to the sea! Happy holiday!
Marine Day (in Japanese, „Umi no Hi“) is a national holiday in Japan, held on the third Monday of July and observed as a day off. It is often described as the only national holiday in the world dedicated specifically to the sea. Its purpose is to give thanks for the gifts of the ocean and to remember how much the island nation depends on fishing, trade and shipping. The day was first observed as a national holiday in 1996 (on 20 July), and since 2003 it has been a movable date: the third Monday of July, under the so-called „Happy Monday“ system, which creates long weekends. In 2020 and 2021 the date was moved because of the Tokyo Olympic Games. Many people head to the beach, and some ports hold ceremonies and events about seafaring. The holiday falls in midsummer, and its date changes each year.
