Ugadi / Gudi Padwa

19 March 2026 · movable holiday — Happy New Year! May your life hold all six flavours!

Ugadi (in Telugu and Kannada) and Gudi Padwa (in Marathi) mark the new year in the lunisolar calendar of the Deccan region, celebrated in Maharashtra, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. It falls on the first day of the waxing moon (shukla paksha) in the month of Chaitra, usually in March or April. In a lunisolar calendar, months follow the phases of the Moon, while an occasional extra month keeps the year in step with the Sun. In Maharashtra, families raise a gudi outside their homes: a pole hung with bright silk cloth, a garland of flowers and an upturned copper or silver pot on top, associated with good fortune and victory. In Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Karnataka, people prepare Ugadi pachadi, a dish combining six tastes: sweet, sour, salty, spicy, bitter and astringent. They stand for the mix of joys and hardships in life. Homes are cleaned and decorated with mango-leaf garlands and colourful patterns at the doorway.

Flying across the sky: An ethereal, bluish-silver figure made of luminous dots and fine lines like a constellation: a tall pole crowned with an upturned pot, a flowing silk cloth and a garland of tiny stars, gently swaying across the night sky
