Corpus Christi

4 June 2026 · movable holiday — The streets bloom with flowers – a bright and blessed feast!

Corpus Christi, called Fronleichnam in German, is a Catholic feast honouring the Eucharist (Holy Communion). It is held on the Thursday 60 days after Easter, so its date changes every year. The feast began in Liège in the 13th century, and in 1264 Pope Urban IV extended it to the whole Western Church. In Germany it is a public holiday in six states – Bavaria, Baden-Württemberg, North Rhine-Westphalia, Hesse, Rhineland-Palatinate and Saarland – and in some municipalities of Saxony and Thuringia. The central tradition is a solemn procession in which a priest carries the consecrated host while the faithful follow with songs and prayers. Streets and altars are often decorated with flowers, and in many places elaborate carpets of flower petals are laid out along the route. Because the feast follows movable Easter, which falls on the first Sunday after the first spring full moon, its date depends on both the Sun and the Moon.
