Corpus Christi
4 June 2026 · movable holiday — The streets are dressed in flowers, quiet and beautiful this morning.
Corpus Christi (Latin for “the Body of Christ”) is a Catholic feast honouring the Eucharist, the sacrament of bread and wine. It began as a local feast in Liège in 1246, inspired by the nun Juliana of Mont Cornillon, and in 1264 Pope Urban IV extended it to the whole Western Church. It falls on the Thursday 60 days after Easter. In Brazil it is a day off in many cities, though not uniformly everywhere. The best-known tradition is the street carpets, the “tapetes”: believers draw colourful pictures on the streets along the procession route, using coloured sawdust, salt, coffee grounds, sand and flowers. Ouro Preto and Tiradentes are famous for them. The date moves because it follows Western Easter, which falls on the first Sunday after the first full moon following the spring equinox. In 2026 Corpus Christi falls on 4 June.
Flying across the sky: An ethereal, bluish-silver carpet made of luminous dots and fine lines, like a constellation, unrolling slowly across the night sky in intricate floral and geometric patterns
