Palm Sunday (Cveti)
5 April 2026 · movable holiday — May spring and peace enter every home. Blessed Cveti!
Palm Sunday, known in Serbia as Cveti, is observed on the Sunday before Orthodox Easter. It commemorates the entry of Jesus Christ into Jerusalem, when people welcomed him with branches and cheers. Where palms do not grow, Orthodox communities use willow branches instead. They are blessed in church and then taken home. According to an old custom, people wash their faces in the morning with water containing a flower, wishing for health and freshness. Cveti is a movable feast: its date depends on the calculation of Orthodox Easter, which follows a lunisolar calendar. Easter falls on the first Sunday after the first full moon following the spring equinox, but the Orthodox Church calculates these with tables and the Julian calendar, fixing the equinox on 21 March (Old Style). That is why Orthodox Easter often differs from the actual full moon and equinox in the sky. Palm Sunday therefore always comes one week before Easter and opens Holy Week.
Flying across the sky: An ethereal, bluish-silver star figure made of luminous dots and fine lines, like a constellation drifting across the sky: a slender willow branch with soft catkins, swirling around it a few small spring flowers carried by the wind
