Palm Sunday

29 March 2026 · movable holiday — A peaceful and bright Palm Sunday! May a quiet week begin.

Palm Sunday is the Sunday before Easter and opens Holy Week. Christians remember Jesus entering Jerusalem, where people welcomed him with branches. In Germany, especially in Bavaria and other southern regions, believers bring decorated bouquets, called Palmbuschen (palm bunches), to church to be blessed. They are tied from willow twigs and greenery, often with ribbons, sometimes on a long pole. Since palms do not grow in Central Europe, local plants, most often willow, are used instead of palm branches. After the blessing, the bouquets are taken home. The date is movable: in the Western (Catholic and Protestant) tradition Easter falls on the Sunday after the first full moon on or after 21 March, as set by church calculations that approximate the real full moon and spring equinox, so Palm Sunday shifts every year, tying the day to both the Moon and the Sun. In 2026 it falls on 29 March.

Flying across the sky: An ethereal, bluish-silver figure made of luminous dots and fine lines, like a constellation: a tall slender pole crowned with a rounded bouquet of willow twigs and greenery, with ribbons of starlight fluttering from it
