Three Holy Hierarchs – Day of Greek Education
30 January 2026 — Light for everyone who learns! Light for everyone who learns! A blessed feast of the Three Holy Hierarchs!
The Three Holy Hierarchs are Basil the Great, Gregory the Theologian and John Chrysostom, three bishops and teachers of the Church who lived in the 4th and 5th centuries. The Orthodox Church honours them together on 30 January, and each of them also has a separate feast day. According to tradition, in the 11th century a dispute arose in Constantinople about which of the three was the greatest. They then appeared in a dream to Bishop John Mauropous and said they were equal before God, and the joint feast was established. In Greece, 30 January is also the day of Greek education and a school holiday: pupils stay home from classes, and there are services and celebrations in churches and schools. The three saints are regarded as patrons of learning and of teachers. The date falls in midwinter, when nights are still long and the sky is often clear. The scroll and quill remind us that knowledge is a light passed from person to person.
Flying across the sky: An ethereal, bluish-silver figure made of luminous dots and fine lines, like a constellation: an unrolled scroll and a quill drifting across the night sky
