Saint Tryphon Day

14 February 2026 — Cheers to the vine! The first cut brings luck and full barrels!

Trifundan is a feast of vine-growers and winemakers linked to the martyr Saint Tryphon. In Serbia it falls on 14 February, because the Church calendar follows the Julian reckoning: there the day is 1 February, which today corresponds to 14 February in the Gregorian calendar. By custom, the vineyard owner goes out, trims a few buds with a pruning knife, pours wine from a flask over the vines and prays for an abundant harvest. Afterwards people gather for a meal, drink wine and make merry. In many places a „king of the vineyards“ is chosen. The feast marks the end of winter and the first labour of the farming year. The sky does not set the date, which follows a fixed church calendar rather than the moon. Still, by this time of year the days are noticeably lengthening, as if urging people back outdoors. A related feast in Bulgaria is Trifon Zarezan: the Church honours Saint Tryphon on 1 February, while by folk tradition it is also celebrated on 14 February, i.e. 1 February in the old style.
