La Tomatina
26 August 2026 · movable holiday — Watch out! Today the sky is full of juicy tomatoes!
La Tomatina takes place in the Valencian town of Buñol, Spain, on the last Wednesday of August. Thousands of participants throw overripe tomatoes at one another for about an hour. According to the most popular story, it began in 1945 during a local festival, when a dispute among young people led to a fight with vegetables from a nearby stall. The custom was repeated in later years and grew into a major event. Today it is organised: tickets are limited, start and end are marked by signals, and the tomatoes are thrown in the town streets. Participants must squash tomatoes before throwing them so nobody gets hurt. Afterwards, the streets are washed down with water. The festival is part of Buñol's August celebrations. Its link to the sky is the calendar: the day follows a weekday rule rather than a moon phase, and falls at the end of summer.
Flying across the sky: An ethereal, bluish-silver star figure made of luminous dots and fine lines, like a constellation drifting across the sky: a round smiling tomato with a tiny leafy crown and swimming goggles
