Medicine Day
14 March 2026 — Shh… I can hear the stars' heartbeat. Health to all!
Medicine Day, known in Turkey as Tıp Bayramı, is observed every year on 14 March. It commemorates 14 March 1827, when the first modern medical school of the Ottoman Empire was founded in Istanbul under Sultan Mahmud II. Today the day honours doctors and all medical workers. In Turkey, ceremonies are held at medical faculties and hospitals, students lay flowers at memorials, and people express their thanks to physicians. It is also an occasion to remember the importance of health care and science. The date is fixed in the solar calendar and has no direct link to moon phases or solstices. It does fall close to the spring equinox, when days grow longer and the night sky is pleasant to observe. Since ancient times, physicians and astronomers have often shared knowledge, as the sky helped people to keep a calendar and track time.
