Teej (Hariyali Teej)

15 August 2026 · movable holiday — Swing among the clouds – the monsoon is here and the earth is green!

Hariyali Teej (“green Teej”) is one of several summer Teej festivals – a folk festival celebrating the monsoon, greenery and women. It falls on the third day of the waxing moon in the month of Shravana, usually in July–August, so its date moves each year with the lunar calendar. It is celebrated mainly in northern India and is especially popular in Rajasthan and neighbouring regions. In Nepal the bigger festival of the same family is Hartalika Teej, which falls later, at the end of summer. Women wear green saris and bangles, decorate their palms with henna (a natural dye made from a plant’s leaves), hang swings from trees, and sing songs about rain, love and family. Tradition links the festival to the goddess Parvati and the god Shiva, and many women fast for the wellbeing of their loved ones. The day follows the Moon’s phase: it comes two to three days after the new moon, when a thin silver crescent is again visible in the evening sky.

Flying across the sky: An ethereal, bluish-silver figure made of luminous dots and fine lines, like a constellation: a girl in a flowing sari swinging on a flower-garlanded swing, her hands traced with delicate henna patterns of tiny stars
