World Water Day

22 March 2026 — Splash! Every drop counts – keep it clean!

World Water Day is observed every year on 22 March, as designated by the United Nations. The idea was put forward at the 1992 UN Conference on Environment and Development in Rio de Janeiro, and the first observance took place in 1993. Its aim is to remind us how precious clean drinking water is and that many people still lack safe access to it. Each year the UN picks a theme, while schools, towns and organisations hold river clean-ups, exhibitions and discussions about saving water. The date falls close to the March equinox, when day and night are nearly equal and, in the Northern Hemisphere, nature wakes up after winter. Water also links us to the sky: according to some scientific hypotheses, part of Earth's water may have arrived long ago with small bodies from space, such as asteroids and comets, and scientists search for water on other worlds because where there is water, life may be possible. That is why our little droplet hops from star to star.
