World Bicycle Day

3 June 2026 — I'm pedalling through the stars! How far will you go today without any fuel?

World Bicycle Day is observed every year on 3 June. It was proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly in a resolution adopted on 12 April 2018. The resolution describes the bicycle as a simple, affordable, reliable, clean and environmentally fit means of transport that has been in use for about two centuries. The aim is to encourage countries to include the bicycle in their policies on transport, health and education. The ancestor of the modern bicycle is the “draisine” of the German Karl von Drais, from 1817. People mark the day with rides, group tours and races. In the Northern Hemisphere, the date falls close to the summer solstice, when days are long and evenings stay light and warm, which makes it a good time for a ride that may last until the first stars appear. The phase of the Moon on 3 June changes from year to year, so our cyclist rides in front of a full moon only as a symbol of a night-time ride.
