World Teachers’ Day

5 October 2026 — Behind every star there is a teacher – thank you! Shall we draw a constellation? Shall we draw a constellation?

World Teachers’ Day is observed every year on 5 October in more than 100 countries. The date commemorates 5 October 1966, when a special intergovernmental conference in Paris adopted the UNESCO and International Labour Organization (ILO) Recommendation concerning the Status of Teachers. The document sets out the rights and responsibilities of teachers, as well as standards for their preparation, recruitment and working conditions. The Day was established in 1994 and is used to remind people how much teachers matter and that many more are needed around the world. Each year UNESCO and its partners choose a theme. Students and parents often offer flowers, cards and words of thanks. The day is not tied to a solstice or a lunar phase, but the sky makes a fine textbook: since ancient times, observers have passed the names of stars and the stories of constellations from one generation to the next. In the same way, a teacher lights a spark of knowledge that keeps shining long after the lesson ends.

Flying across the sky: An ethereal, bluish-silver figure made of luminous dots and thin lines, like a constellation moving across the sky: a long pointer-telescope that taps the stars and draws glowing lines between them, as if sketching on a blackboard
