World Theatre Day

27 March 2026 — The curtain rises! The stars are the best audience.

World Theatre Day is observed every year on 27 March. It was established in 1961 on the initiative of the International Theatre Institute (ITI) and has been celebrated since 1962. The Institute was founded under UNESCO and brings together people of the stage from around the world. Each year a distinguished figure from the theatre writes a message that is read out in theatres across the globe before performances. The first message was written by the French author Jean Cocteau. On this day theatres hold premieres, open rehearsals, meetings with audiences and street performances. The idea is simple: the stage brings people together, helps them understand one another and feel other people’s stories. The masks of joy and sorrow are an ancient symbol of theatre, inherited from antiquity. The day has no link to the lunar calendar or any astronomical event, since its date is fixed. Yet theatre and the sky are alike: both are watched in the dark, and both invite us to look up and look within.

Flying across the sky: Two ethereal, bluish-silver masks – one smiling, one pensive – drawn as constellations of bright dots and fine lines, drifting across the night sky
