International Dance Day

29 April 2026 — Join hands – the sky is dancing a round dance today!

International Dance Day is celebrated every year on 29 April. It was established in 1982 by the International Theatre Institute (ITI, a partner of UNESCO) and is dedicated to the birthday of the French choreographer Jean-Georges Noverre, born in 1727. Noverre is regarded as the creator of the ballet d’action and one of the reformers who made ballet an independent theatrical art; he wrote the Letters on Dancing and Ballets. Each year a prominent figure from the dance world writes a message that is read out in many countries. On this day there are performances, open classes, flash mobs and street shows. Dance exists in every culture, from Bulgarian horos and rachenitsas to the waltz, tango and contemporary dance. The date is fixed in the Gregorian calendar, so it does not depend on the Moon or the solstices. Still, the night sky suits a round dance: the stars look like a chain of dancers slowly turning above us.

Flying across the sky: An ethereal, bluish-silver chain of dancing figures made of luminous dots and thin lines, like a constellation, holding hands in a round dance (a horo) and winding slowly across the night sky
