The holidays of the sky

📻

World Radio Day

13 February 2026 — Can you hear that? The sky is humming on my wavelength!

World Radio Day is observed every year on 13 February. The date marks 13 February 1946, when United Nations Radio began broadcasting. The day was proclaimed by UNESCO in 2011 and endorsed by the UN General Assembly in 2012. Each year has a theme, and radio stations around the world prepare special programmes. Radio keeps working where the internet or mains power does not: it runs on batteries, reaches mountains and remote villages, and is often the first source of news and warnings in emergencies. Its link to the sky is direct. Radio waves are a form of electromagnetic radiation, and astronomers use radio telescopes to catch faint signals from distant galaxies, pulsars and clouds of gas. The same physics that brings you a favourite song also brings news from the deep cosmos. The date is fixed, so the day always falls on 13 February.

Flying across the sky: An ethereal, bluish-silver figure made of bright dots and fine lines like a constellation: a vintage radio with a tall antenna, with glowing note-shaped waves drifting out and spreading between the stars as it glides across the night sky
