World Migratory Bird Day
9 May 2026 · movable holiday — We follow the stars all the way home! Fair winds!
World Migratory Bird Day is observed twice a year, on the second Saturday of May and the second Saturday of October, reflecting the different migration seasons around the globe. The campaign began in 2006 and is organised by the secretariats of two international conservation agreements on migratory species, together with partner organisations. Each year has a new theme, such as reducing light pollution (2022), the importance of water (2023) or insects as food for birds (2024). Thousands of events, from birdwatching walks to exhibitions and school activities, take place worldwide. Bulgaria lies on the Via Pontica, one of the great bird migration routes between Europe and Africa, used by storks, cranes and pelicans. Many migrating birds navigate by the sun, by Earth's magnetic field and, at night, by the stars. That makes the day a good reason to look up at the sky.
Flying across the sky: An ethereal, bluish-silver flock of cranes drawn as luminous dots and thin lines like a constellation, flying in a wedge formation across the night sky, their wings slowly flapping as the stars twinkle along their path
