World Post Day

9 October 2026 — I'm carrying a letter to a faraway planet. Got a stamp for Mars?

World Post Day is celebrated every year on 9 October. The date recalls 9 October 1874, when the Universal Postal Union was founded in Bern, Switzerland. It brought countries together under common rules for exchanging letters and parcels across borders, so that a letter can reach its addressee even when it passes through many countries. The union later became a specialized agency of the United Nations. The day was declared at the union's congress in Tokyo in 1969, and since then postal services around the world have marked it with exhibitions, special stamps, open days and campaigns. The link to the sky is a playful one: people have sent messages into space too. The Voyager 1 and 2 probes carry golden records with sounds and images from Earth, and the Pioneer 10 and 11 probes carry engraved plaques meant for any possible alien minds. So even the most distant address might one day receive a letter.

Flying across the sky: An ethereal, bluish-silver figure made of bright dots and fine lines, like a constellation: a small winged envelope with a star-shaped stamp, gliding across the night sky
